Aquatic Center supports swimming lessons, summer fun

The Aquatic Center, 321 James Ave., opened in 1975 and was rebuilt with new features, including a water slide, in 1998.

The center offers:

    • Zero-depth splash pool with interactive play features
    • 226-foot water slide
    • Main pool from 3.5 to 13 feet deep
    • Diving well with 1-meter diving board
    • Climbing walls
    • Shade umbrellas
    • Family bath house
    • Handicap-accessibility

Proposed projects would sustain the pool long-term

The city is asking voters to approve borrowing funds for the following projects, which total $1.15 million.

Replace water heating systems: After 25 years of use, the heating systems for water in sinks, showers and the main pool need replacing. $275,000
Replace the electrical system: The electrical system is greatly corroded and needs replacing. $176,000
LED lighting: Replacing the fluorescent lighting with LED technology throughout the center would greatly reduce the energy used for lighting. $22,000
Replace play features in kiddie pool: After 25 years of use, the play features in the splash pool, or kiddie pool, need replacing. $107,000
Limited remodeling to enlarge the concession area and provide more  options for entering the facility: Moving the entry would allow users to choose whether to use the women’s, men’s or family-friendly/gender-neutral changing areas. The concessions area would increase from 130 to 300 square feet. It would also offer a service window for people in nearby rec areas, including the pickleball and basketball courts, to order concessions without having to pay to enter the Aquatic Center. $570,000
