About Us

The Albert Lea Police Department is situated in the Law Enforcement section of the Freeborn County Government Center at 411 S. Broadway Ave. The Law Enforcement Center is occupied by both the Albert Lea Police Department and the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office. This arrangement allows both departments to share the records keeping and dispatching functions.

The Police Department is comprised of twenty-eight sworn officers. The organization structure consists of a Chief, four Lieutenants, one Corporal, three Detectives and nineteen Patrol Officers.

Civilian personnel serve in the capacity of E-911 Dispatchers, Community Service Officers, and Animal Control Officer.

The Police Officers and Detectives belong to and are represented by The Minnesota Public Employees Association.  Dispatchers belong to and are represented by the Teamsters Union.

The Patrol Officers work ten or twelve-hour shifts with rotating days off. Shift assignment is determined by bidding on a seniority basis.

Sworn Officers are offered a comprehensive benefits package and are afforded retirement benefits through the Public Employees Retirement Association of Minnesota (P.E.R.A.)
