Broadway Ridge Renewal Grant

PROGRAM GUIDELINES: The Broadway Ridge Renewal Grant will provide financial assistance to historic commercial property owners interested in façade improvements for the purpose of preserving the architectural character that is unique to Albert Lea.

Rehabilitation design shall be consistent with the architectural and historical integrity of the building. Plans will be reviewed by the Heritage Preservation Commission and shall be consistent with the Commission’s “Architectural Guidelines for Historic Preservation.”

FUNDING: The Renewal Grant was established through contributions from the City of Albert Lea and Freeborn County.

MAXIMUM GRANT: This is a 50/50 matching grant up to $25,000 for building facades of 900 square feet or less and up to $50,000 for facades greater than 900 sq. ft.

SMALL PROJECTS MATCHING GRANTS:  This is a  50/50 matching grant of up to $2,500 for projects such as window replacement, movable awnings, signs, and other non-structural façade improvements without the requirement for an easement agreement. 

ELIGIBLE PROJECTS: Projects must be located in the National Commercial Historic District, with the primary target area being buildings on Broadway Avenue between Main Street and Fountain Street.

The Renewal Fund may only be used to finance façade improvements.

Projects may include:

  • Repair / replacement of windows and doors
  • Masonry repair
  • Canvas-style awnings
  • Lighting
  • Signage
  • Painting
  • Sidewalks

 

Expenditures such as tinted windows, vinyl awnings, electric box signs, inventory and equipment, operating expenses, non-fixed improvements, and general maintenance are ineligible.
