Council seeking more info, feedback on pet regulations

City News May 13, 2026

After much discussion at its May meeting, the Albert Lea City Council decided to seek more information from the police department on pet complaints, along with more public feedback, before deciding on proposed changes to dog and cat regulations.

The proposed changes aim to promote responsible pet ownership, prevent nuisance and safety concerns, and strengthen enforcement tools.

Proposed changes:

  • Instead of the current limit of 2 dogs and 2 cats per household, allow more pets as long as owners do not create noise, odor or safety problems.
  • Pet-owners must also maintain sanitary conditions.
  • Ban feeding feral cats unless part of a program to trap and neuter stray cats.

The council will likely discuss the changes at its next meeting on Tuesday, May 26, at 7 p.m.
