SHARED ROADS SAVE LIVES: May is Motorcycle Awareness Month in Albert Lea. At the April 27 Albert Lea City Council meeting, Mayor Rich Murray officially proclaimed the month to highlight road safety. With him in the photo are members of the Flatlanders chapter of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education (A.B.A.T.E.), who continue to advocate for rider safety and education.
Minnesota has already lost 3 motorcyclists on our roads this year. To prevent further fatalities, riders and drivers must work together to prioritize safety.
Drivers: Always look twice for motorcycles, especially at intersections and turns.
Riders: Wear high-visibility protective gear, ride at safe speeds within your skillset, and sharpen your skills with a training course.
Every choice matters. Look out for each other and keep Minnesota moving safely.

How about offering a riding course here in Albert Lea. Or better yet bring the road course back to Albert Lea so people don't have to travel so far to even get their motorcycle endorsement
I ride with my husband and the biggest issue I have is the ones that do stupid stuff to make the good/safe riders look bad. I have seen so many riding just around my neighborhood not caring about stopping at stop signs, watching for pedestrians, revving up behind someone going “too slow”, driving 45-60 mph in a 30 mph zone, the list goes on & on. Just be cautious of all surroundings. It’s not hard no matter what vehicle you drive.
Let me add, these young kids on electric bikes that go 25 mph need some training,I'm sure it's fun as hell flying around at that age but I've had to slow down because one kid just turned right in front of me...I just think they need to be aware of their responsibility on the road,I don't want to see or hear about any of them getting hurt it's a new era and we all need to adjust...
Great job, guys, and thank you, Mayor!
No one knows what a stop sign or a speed limit is in Albert Lea, maybe enforce the laws better to help save lives also? Idk make sense to me.
I just had a guy on a crotch rocket fly down my street doing 70 a couple days ago my street is highly populated with children , how about we talk about them SLOWING DOWN !!!!!@

I thought that was always the law.
I sure hope Driver's Pay Attention, too many people going through stop arms on the Buses!!!
New? I was taught that in the 80's.
We’re proud to introduce the updated graphics on our squad vehicles.
As many of you know, the City of Albert Lea updated its logo in 2023. In keeping with that change, the Albert Lea Police Department updated our own logo and uniform patches to align with the city’s new look.
The new squad car graphics represent the final phase of that transition. While the look may be new, our mission remains the same—serving our community with Integrity, Respect, Accountability, and Service.
This is not a full or immediate fleet replacement. Instead, the transition will occur gradually as older squad vehicles reach the end of their service life and are replaced through normal rotation. The vehicle unveiled today is the first in this phased rollout, and you will begin to see the new design appear incrementally across the fleet over time.
We’re excited to carry forward a unified identity that reflects both our department and the city we proudly serve.

Not just Albert lea but cities nationwide should step away from the "tactical" look and take a page from foreign countries and make the vehicle brightly colored and easily distinguishable from a distance in case of emergency instead of hiding the lights and decals so they can make arrests
Looks nice, they should maybe put light bars back on the roof, to help with identifying easier incase of emergency!
This is definitely better!! We can see y'all and not have to guess if its a cop or not.
I like it!! The white door helps it stand out a bit more. 😶
I like the decal but not a fan of the white door.

Now just make sure your running lights work! No need to be sneaky! And you wonder why people hate the police!
Where is the upgrade at? Looks like a sheriff’s vehicle
The real question is, was it really a need to waste our tax dollars on? The old design was working just fine.
I like the water tower
You should change how you present it sayinf your new squad vehicles cause the are owned by the people and tax dollars
Did they get new police cars
Looks nice. But plain
And how much did that set the city back 😳
They look nice but pretty plain Jane
This is where our tax dollars are going to😁
And who pays for these new looks, taxpayers should be paying for their vehicles

SAFE ACTIONS SAVE LIVES: With spring fever in the air and construction season starting, remember that your actions behind the wheel save lives. This National Work Zone Awareness Week, MnDOT is honoring 54 fallen workers with a powerful barrel display on I-35 near Faribault to remind drivers that the stakes are incredibly high - 900+ people died in work zone crashes last year, and most were actually the drivers and passengers. Whether you're working on the road or just passing through, please keep your eyes up, ditch the distractions, and stay alert. This is the only way we’ll drive Minnesota toward zero deaths and make sure everyone gets home safe. Check 511mn.org for road reports before you head out, even when the weather is nice. ... Albert Lea Fire Rescue responded to 522 College St. West at 7:54 p.m. April 26 for the report of a house fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters found fire in a bathroom on the second floor. Firefighters advanced hose lines and extinguished the fire. All residents of the home were able to escape unharmed.
The losses of structure and contents are estimated to be about $20,000.
The Minnesota Fire Marshal's Office was contacted and coordinated with the department investigator.
The cause of the fire was a vent fan in the ceiling overheating and igniting the plastic cover.
Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
ALFR reminds residents that ventilation fans are to be used for only short time frames. Less than 20 minutes is best. Prolonged use may cause overheating and potential fire.

CHANGE ANIMAL ORDINANCE? At its May 11 meeting, the Albert Lea City Council will consider several changes to regulating dogs and cats. The main change would be replacing the current limit of 2 dogs and 2 cats per household with a focus on quality of care and preventing nuisance conditions.
Proposed changes:
- Allow more pets as long as owners do not create noise, odor or safety problems.
- Pet-owners must also maintain sanitary conditions.
- Ban feeding feral cats unless part of a program to trap and neuter stray cats.
Also:
- Strengthen city’s enforcement powers.
- Clarify several definitions, including for service animals.
- Strengthens rules on dangerous dogs.

Yikes.
limit cats to two, people will have four. with no limits, people will own a hundred.
Instead of prohibiting feeding of feral cats and having them start going through trash cans, why don’t we start funding spay and neuter programs!
If you aren’t keeping things clean then you would be in violation. Love that this could open the possibility to foster
Feeding ferals does not hurt anything! Would you rather they starve?
This is rediculous!
I will never stop feeding the outdoor cats. They didn't choose that life. Outdoor life was chosen for them. Im sure they would all love to be part of a loving family ♥️
Good for the City! We don’t need you to tell us what we can or can’t do
The absolute opposite of what needs to happen, in this city. You cant even uphold the current ordinances relating to animals, as well as their wellbeing. Now you want to make it worse? Im so tired of begging the city/police to uphold the animal ordinances in our neighborhood. 9 dogs. 9. Disgusting conditions, constant noise, dogs running off chain, and nothing being done. But, sure. This will help.
Why not make the necessary changes to the existing ordinance first to make it stronger and more enforceable? What's the necessity of going from a limited amount of animals per household to an unlimited amount? The biggest problem with alot of city ordinances is that they are complaint driven and pit neighbors against neighbors and overwhelm law enforcement. Prove you can enforce existing ordinances before you create new ones that are even harder to monitor and enforce.🐕🐈👮♂️
I think changing this ordinance will cause a lot of issues. Do we have an animal control authority person?
Thank goodness animal welfare is finally being addressed. However, the ALPD acknowledges it does not track cat vs. dog complaints, complaint trends, enforcement outcomes, or inspections. Responsible ownership” is not a plan without evidence, accountability, and enforcement. The number one concern the ALPD deals with is quality-of-life issues caused by people being bad neighbors. By all means, strengthen and enforce the law for those who let their animals just run free and damage neighbors' property and even hurt others. And fund spay and neutering. Protecting our animals will only make our community better because I know dogs make everything better.
If dogs need to be on leashes while outside, cats should be as well. Part of responsible ownership.
Yeah, the ALPD is easily swayed. All you have to do is keep bitching and complaining to them and they will make a problem where there isn't one. They don't enforce the ordinances where they need to but do the opposite.
I will NEVER stop loving n feeding feral cats!! It’s NOT their fault that they are roaming the streets seeking help so they too can eat! It’s their owners responsibility to keep their cats safe inside! So if you n everyone else is so cruel against feral cats, shame on you!!
Dangerous dogs! Excuse me, umm look NO FURTHER at the dangerous dogs look at the owners, they are trained to be aggressive dangerous! Problem solved: if the owners don’t care about their pets , n train them to be aggressive dogs nail the owners!
So glad not to live in city limits.
🦉
Completely stupid idea
No feeding of feral cats… How about free spaying of feral cats… !?!? and let people feed them. Free bag of cat food for feral cats brought in for spaying!
I will never stop feeding feral cats! I guess some of you are so coldhearted you love seeing these animals suffer! Instead of fighting against real cats why don’t you get up and help do something about the problem! Let’s get them spayed and neutered. It’s not the feral cats problem. They’re out there. It’s people who caused all this mess. Irresponsible people who just dumped their animals and never have their female females and males fixed.
What about people letting their cats run free? Should be the same requirements as there is for dogs. I don’t need someone’s cat pooping in my garden.
I agree with Serenity!!
So, let's change city ordinance to make it better. Hmmmm well let's see, if they don't enforce the rules there are now what will make a difference if they add new rules! Ya let the Police do more enforcement. Now they will make up there own rule just to make it easier to harass a home, family or person they want with this new rule! Yaaaa!!! And what is a dangerous dog? Who gets to decide that? It is never the dogs fault on how it reacts to situations, it is always how they are trained!!!! Just more pathetic rules for us but not for them..... So Pathetic......
