Albert Lea firefighter proves among world’s toughest, earning World Champion title

City News November 2, 2026

Captain Kurt Wallace of Albert Lea Fire Rescue recently returned from the Firefighter World Championship in Las Vegas with three medals, a new Minnesota state record, and a top-tier standing on the global stage. The elite competition brought together athletes representing more than 21 countries with 381 medals awarded across all divisions.

“The grueling nature of this competition directly mirrors real-life emergency scenarios,” said Fire Chief Jeff Laskowske. “Kurt’s success builds elite endurance and strength that translate directly to on-scene performance. Having him train alongside our crew sparks healthy competition, mentors our firefighters, and ensures our team is even better prepared to serve and protect the community.”

The firefighter challenge is a test of physical fitness and operational skills, putting competitors through an intense obstacle course that simulates real-life emergency scenarios:

  • Carrying a 42-pound hose pack up a 5-story tower
  • Hoisting a 42-pound hose roll up the 5-story tower using a rope
  • Driving a 160-pound steel beam 5 feet along a track using a mallet
  • Navigating a slalom course and dragging a charged hose line 75 feet to hit a water target
  • Dragging a 175-pound rescue mannequin backward for 100 feet

Competing in the male 50–59 age division, Wallace secured top finishes across three major event categories:

  • Individual race: Earned second place overall with a time of 1:43.44. During qualifications, he set a new Minnesota state record with a time of 1:43.00.
  • Tandem event: Won first place alongside his partner with a time of 1:24.75, finishing a full 9 seconds ahead of the runner-up team.
  • Relay event: Helped lead his squad to a second-place finish with a time of 4:19.49 despite the team running one member short.

The championship also sparked a regional rivalry and friendship. The individual race winner, Todd Krukow of Iowa, met Wallace at the event, where the two top finishers discovered how close they live to each other and now plan to train together for future competitions.

Following his success in Las Vegas, Wallace is preparing for future competitions, including the FireFit Challenge in Canada.

“My training has been paying off,” said Wallace. “I’m looking forward to next season.”
