Albert Lea Police Department issues statement
City News January 15, 2026The Albert Lea Police Department (ALPD) is aware of recent federal immigration enforcement activity in the area and wants to clarify its role.
ALPD enforces Minnesota state law and City of Albert Lea ordinances. Officers do not enforce federal immigration law and do not participate in federal immigration operations. Those responsibilities rest solely with federal agencies, and ALPD is not typically notified in advance of their activity.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is a federal law enforcement agency within the Department of Homeland Security. The ALPD does not have authority over federal agencies and does not direct or interfere with their operations. It is also important for the public to understand that obstructing federal law enforcement activity is unlawful.
The ALPD’s priority is public safety. Officers may be present only to address safety concerns such as traffic control or maintaining order if gatherings occur. The ALPD’s role in those situations is focused on safety and de-escalation, not immigration enforcement.
The ALPD is asking community members to remain calm and peaceful, avoid behavior that aligns with obstructing federal law enforcement, and follow any lawful instructions from officers to help ensure everyone’s safety.
ALPD remains committed to serving Albert Lea with professionalism, respect, and a focus on public safety for all.
