Broadway Ridge Renewal Grant

Overview

The Broadway Ridge Renewal Grant program provides financial assistance to historic commercial property owners interested in façade improvements for the purpose of preserving the architectural character that is unique to Albert Lea.

Rehabilitation designs must be consistent with the architectural and historical integrity of the building. The Heritage Preservation Commission reviews plans and ensures that plans meet the Albert Lea Commercial Historic District Design Guidelines.

Ignite Nutrition used a Broadway Ridge grant toward rebuilding the façade of 132 S. Broadway as part of a funding package from the City of Albert Lea and partners toward bringing new life and new business to the long-vacant building.

The Renewal Grant was established through contributions from the City of Albert Lea and Freeborn County.

This is a 50/50 matching grant up to $50,000 for any one building not to exceed $50,000 over five years.

Projects must be located in the National Commercial Historic District, with the primary target area being buildings on Broadway Avenue between Main Street and Fountain Street.

The Renewal Fund may only be used to finance façade improvements.

Projects may include:

  • Repair or replacement of windows and doors
  • Masonry repair
  • Canvas-style awnings
  • Exterior lighting
  • Exterior signage
  • Painting
  • Roofing
  • Architectural plans and estimates

Expenditures that do not add to or preserve the historic character of the downtown or improve structural integrity of the building such as tinted windows, vinyl awnings, electric box signs, inventory and equipment, operating expenses, non-fixed improvements, and general maintenance are ineligible.

The city receives and reviews grant applications on a first-come basis. The property owner, or the business owner with the owner’s approval, may obtain the application, design guidelines, and grant policy from the City Planner’s Office at City Hall, 221 E. Clark St., or may download them below:
