Council orders study for extending water and sewer services
City News October 13, 2026
At its Oct. 12 meeting, the Albert Lea City Council voted to order a feasibility study to help determine whether to extend water and sewer services in the County Road 20/Richway Drive and Plaza Street area in 2027.
Extending services would bring failing septic systems into compliance, improve overall water pressure, and provide water access for development of industrial lots on Plaza Street.
The study will evaluate the following:
- Extension of sewer and water along CR 20/Richway Drive from Elm Street to Pinewood Drive
- Completion of the watermain loop along County Highway 20 and Plaza Street
- Extension of sewer and water along Itasca Road about 350 feet west of West Trail
In addition, the proposed project would include sidewalk improvements on Richway Drive:
Adding curb bump-outs and a crosswalk at the intersection of Greenwood Drive and Richway Drive
Narrowing Richway Drive and adding sidewalks from Martin Road to Lakeview Boulevard
The city is considering this project for 2027 in order to reduce costs by incorporating the installation of water and sewer pipes into a Freeborn County road construction project planned for Richway Drive.
Ordering the feasibility study is the first of many steps if the project proceeds. For more information, watch the council meeting on YouTube.
