What Does a School Board Do? @ Albert Lea Art Center

As part of the Dorothy Godtland Lecture Series, the Board of Directors is pleased to present the program "What Does a School Board Do" with Albert Lea School Board Member Neal Skaar. Neal Skaar was a teacher and coach at the Albert Lea High School for over 40 years and retired in 2014. He was first elected to the school board in 2016. He currently is in his third term on the school board, which ends in 2029. At the lecture, you will learn that to be a school board member, you will need to be voted in by the community and Neal will discuss the politics involved. Also, Neal will explain what functions the school board provides to the school district. From developing policies, overseeing budgets, and hiring and supervising the superintendent. As well as, helping set the curriculum, maintaining the school buildings and equipment, representing the interests of students, and engage with parents and community members to ensure that the schools are serving the needs of the community. There will be a Q & A portion at the end of the program. The Albert Lea School Board’s mission statement: To ensure individual academic, social and emotional growth that leads to engaged citizens and lifelong learners.
