SAFETY ALERT: Heavy Fog 🌫️ + Freezing Temps ❄️
We’re seeing some thick fog out there today, and with temperatures below freezing, conditions can get tricky fast. Please keep these tips in mind this morning if you're heading out:
• Slow Down: Speed is your enemy when visibility is low and roads are icy.
• Use Low Beams: High beams will reflect off the fog and actually make it harder to see.
• Watch for Black Ice: Fog can freeze on the pavement, creating invisible "black ice." Bridges and overpasses are the first to freeze!
• Increase Following Distance: Give yourself (and others) plenty of room to react.
Stay safe and take your time getting where you need to go! 🚗💨

NEWS RELEASE: ALPD RESPONDS TO THREATS OF VIOLENCE
On Feb. 12, 2026, at approximately 12:45 p.m., the Albert Lea Police Department received a report of threats made toward the emergency department at Mayo Clinic Health System-Albert Lea.
Hospital employees reported that a male caller made statements threatening violence if his family member was transferred to a different facility. The call was received through a hospital switchboard, and based on Mayo Clinic Health System’s internal policies and procedures, the clinic initiated a temporary lockdown of its Albert Lea facility.
Albert Lea police officers immediately began investigating the threat and worked to locate the individual believed to be responsible. Officers located the suspect at a residence in Albert Lea shortly thereafter. The individual admitted to making the call and was taken into custody without incident.
Sky Lamont Christensen, age 37, of Albert Lea, was arrested and transported to the Freeborn County Adult Detention Center. He is being held on a charge of threats of violence (Minnesota Statute 609.713, Subd. 1).
There is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation remains active.

Thanks for explaining! Wish I were a billionaire as I would tell mayo to take a hike and build a hospital.
Maybe get a hospital thats actually a hospital instead of a glorified clinic and ambulance dispatch.. I'm sure the dude was stressed etc and mayo prob only wanted to transfer them over for only a small sum of 30k by ambulance 🙄 or 70k+ by heli... not saying what he did was right by any means but I can understand why....
Violence against healthcare workers happens every day. Thank you ALPD for ensuring the safety of all. Its not ok to threaten staff that work hard to care for patients.
Thank you and thanks for explaining.
THANKS ALPD! We appreciate you ALL
Thank you again for keeping us safer.

Good job!
Hate to say it but I bet Mayo gets many calls similar. Not very popular in AL. The care of patients has gone down considerably. Not because of the care providers but the stupid protocols they have yo follow. Protocols thought up by people trying to save a buck or two to increase bonuses to the bigwigs. Same with insurance companies. Regular folk need to take our power back. There are more of us than there are billionaires.
😉
Good job

NEWS RELEASE: FUGITIVE APPREHENSION
On Feb. 12, 2026, at approximately 9:29 a.m., the Albert Lea Police Department (ALPD) assisted the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) Fugitive Apprehension Unit in locating and apprehending a wanted supervised releasee.
The fugitive was a passenger in a vehicle being followed by Minnesota DOC agents. ALPD initiated a traffic stop near Fountain Street and Bridge Avenue. During the stop, the fugitive exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
The fugitive, Nickalos DeWayne Taylor, age 22, of Austin, Minn., ran toward Fountain Lake and across the frozen surface, with officers in foot pursuit. ALPD officers, Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and DOC agents established a perimeter around the lake near Raymond Avenue and Albert Lea Street, ultimately taking Taylor into custody without further incident.
Taylor had been on supervised release for a conviction of second-degree manslaughter. Custody was retained by the Minnesota DOC.

Wow! What an impressive effort!!! Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when they come for you? I haven't seen the episode where they race across a frozen lake, yet! 🤣 Kudos, ALPD!
He ran right into ice on the lake
Thank you! One less chucklehead on the loose.
I was at work when I heard sirens blaring! Albert Lea Police Department well done! I’m not sure if you can answer this question, why was he placed on supervised release? Is he from Albert Lea or somewhere else?
I’m still appreciative of the child abduction case where the officer recognized the situation and got the child rescued.
You got a choice and free will control your thoughts and feelings and action. What’s the purpose of running you get nowhere supervision was not hard. It’s not hard if I can do it anybody could do it just control your thoughts feelings, and action.
Good job ALPD. Thank you for your service and protecting our City.

NEWS RELEASE: SHED FIRE
Albert Lea Fire Rescue (ALFR) responded to 17617 760th Ave. on Monday, Feb. 23, at 10:42 p.m. for the report of a shed on fire.
Fire crews arrived on scene and found an equipment and hay shed fully involved in fire. Crews worked to make a fire attack, but were forced out of the building when the roof began to collapse. Heavy equipment was brought in to remove the burning equipment and hay. The items were extinguished when removed from the shed, and crews were able to extinguish the rest of the fire in the building from exterior doorways. Work continued through the early morning hours and the hay was left to burn due to the deep-seated fires within.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but appears to be accidental in nature.
ALFR was assisted on the scene by the Glenville Fire Department, Hayward Fire Department, Clarks Grove Fire Department and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office.
Damage estimates are unknown at this time, but the equipment and shed were total losses.

Have you seen this billboard east of Skyline Plaza on Main Street?
Minnesota Firefighter Initiative (MnFIRE) installed the billboard to remind firefighters that they have free access and private support during a crisis. The initiative asked our fire chief, Jeff Laskowske, along with other Minnesota fire chiefs, to participate in the campaign.
MnFIRE helps Minnesota’s firefighters protect their health by focusing on the three biggest risks in the service: heart disease, emotional trauma and cancer. Through the Hometown Heroes Assistance Program, the organization offers free health and wellness training to every fire department in the state.
Departments can sign up for two-hour classes covering topics like:
• MnFIRE Awareness: An overview of heart health, trauma, and cancer risks.
• Emotional Wellness
• Cancer Prevention
• Heart Health
• Sleep, Fitness and Nutrition
If needing help right away, firefighters should call the 24-hour hotline at 888-784-6634.

Impressive Jeff!
They should have had the words translated on the show as he was singing!!!!! Shell shock for everyone!!!!!
If it's for firefighters, why not just put up a poster at the fire station? It's not my money, nor is it a big deal, just seems weird to put up a billboard for what, maybe 20 firefighters in town? Don't get me wrong though, I love the message.
Love this! ♥️♥️♥️
public awareness, accurate information is vital. stand with our Albert Lea Fire Rescue & Law Enforcement. hold them as well as who they're accountable to, accountable.
Just because I carry it well, doesn't mean it's not heavy. Admitting you need help, is not a sign of weakness. It's the strongest thing you can do. Reach out to the DAV for copies of the books about PTSD and trauma. We have extra copies to borrow. 507-318-0199 DAV cell number, leave a message.
This is great!
A commentor asked "why a billboard and not just posters".....This billboard may target firefighters...but firefighting is a male‐dominated industry and men's mental health (and mental health in general) is sorely under addressed. Firefighters are highly respected and are an admired representation of strength and valor; to show that strong men sometimes need help and that it is okay to ask for help...this benefits everyone and helps remove the stigma.
I don’t see anything wrong with this! Albert Lea Fire Rescue thank you for sharing this information!

Albert Lea Fire Rescue responded to 923 Lakewood Ave. at 3:41 a.m. today for the report of a space heater on fire.
Fire crews arrived on scene and found the resident had extinguished the fire by unplugging the space heater and pouring a cup of water on it. Both residents received smoke inhalation and were treated on scene. They went to the emergency room by personal vehicle. Fire crews removed the heater from the home and ventilated the smoke.
The cause of the fire was a fault in the space heater. The homeowner was using the unit correctly by plugging it directly into an outlet and remaining in the area and awake while it was being used.
Light smoke damage was recorded in the area of the fire, but did not spread into the structure.
Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service assisted on the scene.

Why show a pic like that
The picture says differently 😂
I think it’s just a picture of a house and a fire truck just stating there was a house fire on Lakewood Avenue because that house don’t even look like anything that would be in that neighborhood
🙏🏻❤️🚒❤️🙏🏻
How big was the cup? Dang!
The photo is misleading. It shows a well involved structure fire, going through the roof. Based on the description of the incident, I’m guessing there was nothing showing on arrival, no lines laid, not even a pump can.
I saw this in that neighborhood app. I didn’t hear any fire truck
Not sure where all you guys have been but this photo has been used for every fire press release for as long as I can remember. And honestly it doesn’t matter if the fire was a small heater or fully engulfed structure, only thing that should matter is the safety for all emergency personal involved and all other pedestrians and animals.
Scary pic ,let's tune down the drama and the happiness of this report is every one is safe 👌
It's amazing that everyone has to complain about something on every post that either the news puts out, the newspaper and police and fire department. Its a picture for goodness sakes, get over it!!!!
People will complain if you posted the picture of the right address. Geez
Omg! This is just the picture they use. Doesn’t matter if the house is fully engulfed or a space heater malfunctioning. But it does get your attention doesn’t it.

FACING MAINTENANCE NEEDS AND AN EXPIRING BID: At its meeting Monday, the Albert Lea City Council will consider 4 options for City Hall after deciding at its last meeting not to proceed with a $1.93 million remodel of the nearly 60-year-old building.
The 4 options include needed maintenance with some adding safety measures and workspace changes. The options range in cost from $862,000 to $1.6 million.
2 options reduce the scope of the original project while adding security upgrades and addressing lower-level office needs. The tax impact would range from $1.12 to $1.56 per $100,000 in property value with some long-term savings in utilities, equipment and staffing.
2 other options focus mainly on maintenance and smaller changes with work spread over several years using maintenance funds. There would be no impact to property taxes in 2027, but could be in later years. There would also be no long-term savings in utility, equipment and staffing.
The low bid for the project expires March 20. After that, the council will need to rebid the project if moving forward with any of the items.

Your lack of awareness is appalling. Knock this shit off and stop spending our tax dollars you flipping crooks! City of Albert Lea - City Hall
Again, the citizens you represent have been screaming at you to stop spending money and raising taxes. You finally listen to your constituents and vote the City Hall remodel project down; which you were commended for by citizens. Two weeks later, you spin this project a few different ways and it's back? What part of stop spending and raising taxes do you not get??
Like toddlers who can’t take “no” for an answer. 🤦♀️
Stop being so greedy!!! You don’t need an upgrade!! Toddlers are more MATURE than you!
They just can't seem to understand that continued tax increases are unbearable on taxpayers!
Trying to sneak in by the back door. Folks are becoming more wise to the sneaky wording and clever distractions of money variants.
Honestly it was the “staff need their own bathroom so they don’t have to see the stinky public homeless people in the public one” that really got to me. (Not an exact quote, but the homeless part absolutely is.) The arrogance was mind blowing.
You vote NO and then you turn around and change your mind. Not listening to your tax payers are you.
Vote No on all options.
Gas is going up up up and now you want to tax us more!!! What has happened to the government in this country??? Can’t we get anybody in there that work for we the people anymore!! This is not the land of bowing down to one individual!!!
Its truly amazing they have the gull to keep at it with tax increases. Looks like every option is too much. Too bad. Move on. Deal with it. We can't all have nice things when we can't afford it.
That’s still ridiculous that much is not needed. You don’t have to keep up with the fire department and high school and the arena. Where does it end.? Can’t I ever get a tax bill that’s somewhat in line with reality. Thanks Jim Cady
We can skip the next increase in taxes-it’s working fine.
Move them all to the expensive updated court house
How about you stop raising everyone’s taxes and start bringing in more jobs to pay for the crap you want! You can’t even fix our roads! Not to mention the flooding! Or here’s a better ideal! The city council can pay for the remodeling out of their pockets since they want it so damn bad! I’m sick of them wasting tax dollars on stupidy
The amount of taxes in the county are forcing people to relocate elsewhere, this town is dead, no hospital, nothing for the kids to do, so crime rate increases, as a retirement community the ones on SSI or a fixed income can’t afford to stay here, is so sad what this town has become, as a child this place was amazing had 2 full malls with variety of shops, a bowling alley, now there’s literally nothing here to do, most people shop in Rochester, Mankato, of the Cities taking our business elsewhere something has to change this town is crumbling and our counsel haven’t changed anything to build it up
In the last year the City has: 1) Raised their budget from about $8.8 million to $9.3 million. 2) Raised the water and sewer rates by about 6%. 3) Proposed confiscating half of our local option sales tax that was originally presented years ago for the sole purpose of cleaning up our lakes and watershed. 4) All of this while knowing full well that our waste water treatment facility has gone from a proposed roughy $31 million to well over $60 million dollar upgrade that is required. And now they need new City Office remodeling declaring that it is a maintenance “need”. Didn’t we also just get hit with quite a large bill that included building a new bathroom at the North Lot to the tune of about $160k - $250k? The City was also considering building a new park “Adams Ave Park” after not having the funds to update and upkeep our current parks and we passed a $9.8 million dollar referendum in 2024. When a taxpayer “wants” to remodel their home and get a bid they can’t afford they don’t do it, even when a contractor puts in an expiration date. They don’t crowdsource funding, they don’t make demands on their mortgage company and they don’t go to the City to increase their neighbors taxes.
Mayor and council, you have a responsibility to the taxpayers who elected you to represent our interests. As leaders, do you or the staff control the situation? Staff statements do not seem to reflect your remodel decision. How many staff still work from home and who's decision is that? At every level of government money is being spent that taxpayers are tired of supplying and unable to sustain. Take control, determine the needs of the city, address them and the rest can be figured out through creative problem solving work shops.
I expect you are all attending?
No money no options no people no taxes?

"We didnt pass the renovation that was on the table" we all rejoice. Then flip it around "we'll, we are still doing it... itll just be slightly SLIGHTLY cheaper" 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ What part of "stop spending our tax money" are we all not understanding here?!
Stop spending our tax dollars like this. Fix the roads, do something more productive for the community as a whole. You guys are seriously showing your lack of fiscal intelligence. You're actually showing lack of general intelligence as well. City of Albert Lea - City Hall
Dear City Council. I work in numerous revenue generating businesses in town whose offices and facilities pay taxes, employee hundreds of residents who pay taxes, and keep this community moving, whose offices are far less luxurious and modern than yours. You can make do. You do not need the renovations you are claiming. Knock it off!
Again, the citizens you represent have been screaming at you to stop spending money and raising taxes. You just voted this project down and now because the City Manager didn't get what he wanted you have to spin the project around again. Come on, do your job and move on to projects that absolutely have to get done and again, the remodel of City Hall is NOT one of them!!!
Enough is enough, quit trying to approach it with it’s only $1.57 per 100k or it only $2.50 per 200k. We can’t keep adding this stress to the tax payers. Look what happened to the Arena project, how many change orders were made because we didn’t think of this or that and that raised costs and are they even using the 2nd sheet of ice yet? We the citizens are tired!

“THE STORY SHOW” is not a theater production. It is simply writers reading their stories: entertaining, inspiring and funny. All proceeds will go toward a collaboration between the United Way’s Welcome Pantry and Moms Bread Co. to provide fresh bread for neighbors in need. For tickets, go to actonbroadway.com. Note: The show may not be suitable for very young children. ... See MoreSee Less

Umm 🤔 some sidewalks n trails that people use each day are NOT being treated. Sometimes I have to walk on the side of the road. Idk 🤷♀️ if you’re short staffed.
Let it melt😂
Agree it will be gone next week. Let nature run it's course.
Thank you!
Thank you for the notice, I feel the city should have odd even parking for snow removal.
Why bother? Waste of money 💰
