Join the Planning Commission and shape how Albert Lea grows
City News December 12, 2025
Albert Lea needs 300 more units to meet local housing needs. Both the north and south industrial parks are nearly out of space for additional businesses. Several properties throughout the city are in poor condition and need either removal or rehabbing.
These are some of the issues that the Planning Commission will advise the Albert Lea City Council on how to resolve.
This 7-member commission is seeking volunteers to fill 2 open seats.
Serving on the Planning Commission is a great way to contribute to Albert Lea’s growth and development. In addition to the issues listed above, the commission advises the city council on zoning laws, certain land use permits and long-range planning.
City Planner Megan Boeck notes that the Planning Commission’s job is not to make sure that the land is right for the proposed use, but to make sure that the proposed use is right for the land and what surrounds it. The commission advocates for the land and the city’s overall health, safety and welfare in all land use applications. The members work to ensure land uses are developed in appropriate areas of the city.
By participating in the decision-making process, commission members can make a difference, expand their networks and gain a deeper understanding of the community.
To be eligible, candidates must be at least age 18 and live in Freeborn County, with preference given to Albert Lea residents. They must be able to able to attend the majority of meetings, usually the first Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m.
“The ideal candidate wants to see Albert Lea grow and can prioritize long-term benefits over short-term gains. This is a great opportunity for new residents wanting to learn more about our community or people new in their profession seeking to build their networks,” Boeck said.
If interested in serving, applications are available at the City Manager’s office on the top floor of City Hall, 221 E. Clark, and on the city’s website at https://bit.ly/PlanningCom. Complete the application and follow its instructions for submittal. The mayor will review the applications and make a recommendation to the city council for filling the vacancies.
Applications are due by Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026.
