Influence local decisions by joining a city board or commission
City News December 17, 2025
Local residents can directly influence city policies, planning, and programs by volunteering for an Albert Lea board or commission. The City of Albert Lea has several openings on boards that advise the city council on various decisions, helping shape outcomes that affect daily life, from parks and recreation to zoning issues and the airport.
In addition to influencing decisions, board members learn how city government works, build relationships and connections, and develop skills that can benefit their personal and professional lives.
To be eligible, candidates must be at least age 18 and live in Freeborn County, with preference given to Albert Lea residents. They must be able to able to attend the majority of meetings.
The ideal candidate offers a community-wide perspective and can prioritize long-term benefits over short-term gains.
The city is seeking volunteers for the following boards.
- Airport Advisory Board: Four openings. Advises the council and administration on the operation and management of the Albert Lea Municipal Airport. The main airport project for 2026 is designing and preparing for the construction of a 6-unit hangar on the north end and prepping the airport for construction of additional hangars on the south end of the terminal. Meets as needed on the third Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m.
- Parks and Recreation Board: Two openings. Acts as a sounding board for the city council and staff on delivery of services related to parks and recreation, including trails, the City Arena, Aquatic Center, pickleball courts, ballfields and other amenities. Meets as needed, usually the third Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
- Planning Commission: Two openings. Recommends ordinances on zoning and subdivisions, along with reviewing development proposals for subdivisions, reviewing conditional uses for certain land uses, and coordinating long-range planning. Meets as needed, usually the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
- Senior Center Board: Three openings, preferably a Senior Center member or resident representing a retirement community, non-profit serving senior citizens or other entity working with older residents. In 2026, this board will advise the council on whether to move the center to a new location, advise staff on how to strengthen programming and help market the center to more potential members. Meets as needed, usually the second Wednesday of the month at noon.
