On the agenda: Design work for airport hangar, roundabout

At its Aug. 10 meeting, the Albert Lea City Council will vote on the following:

Proceeding with design of a 6-unit hangar at the Albert Lea Municipal Airport. The design work is estimated to cost $62,000 with construction estimated at $1.3 million. The federal government will cover 90% of the cost with the State of Minnesota and City of Albert Lea each contributing 5% of the cost.

The airport’s master plan and the Airport Advisory Board have identified this hangar as a priority because the airport has more demand to rent hangar space than it can provide.
Proceeding with design of roundabout at East Main Street and 775^th Avenue: The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) started a study 2 years ago to replace interstate bridges and improve road safety in the Albert Lea area.

MnDOT is planning to replace the I-90 bridge over County Road 46 in 2028.

Starting in 2030, MnDOT plans to also replace the I-90 bridges over I-35 and make some ramp improvements. The safety improvements include roundabouts at both Interstate 35 ramps on East Main Street/County Road 46, and a roundabout at the intersection of East Main Street/County Road 46 and 775th Avenue (map below).

While the state is covering the costs of designing the interstate ramp roundabouts, the City of Albert Lea is responsible for the 775^th Avenue design work, estimated to cost $79,000.
