Step into a police officer’s shoes: ALPD Citizens Academy

City News August 6, 2025
A group of law enforcement and forensic professionals gathered around a long table, wearing gloves and examining various containers and substances. The woman in the foreground on the left, with dyed hair and a fishnet sleeve, holds up a clear cylindrical container. The woman on the right, wearing glasses and a green shirt, uses a small brush to manipulate a substance. A man in a blue polo shirt and a woman in a grey t-shirt look on attentively. In the background, other participants are visible. The setting appears to be a training or workshop environment.

The Albert Lea Police Department invites residents to participate in its upcoming Citizens Academy program, offering an inside look into the daily operations of local law enforcement. Participants meet once a week, learning in-depth information on the department’s policies and procedures. Classes will be held on Monday evenings Sept. 8 through Nov. 10, from 6:30 – 9 p.m.

Topics include:

  • Hiring and training procedures
  • Field training
  • Police equipment
  • Narcotics
  • Use of force
  • Crime scene investigations
  • Community service officer program
  • Driving-under-influence investigations

The program is both lecture and hands-on, including an optional 4-hour ride-along with a police officer.

The course is limited to 16 participants who are at least 18 years old, live or work in the City of Albert Lea, and pass a limited background investigation.

“The Citizens Academy allows us to build stronger relationships with the community we serve,” said Officer Kristen Steinberg. “It’s a chance for residents to see the work of our officers and to gain insight into their daily duties. We encourage anyone interested in learning more about their police department to apply.”

The program began in 2001 when then-Lt. Tim Matson initiated efforts to engage the community in the department’s day-to-day running. Lt. Jeff Strom took over this effort in 2007 and Steinberg now continues the program.

Applications are due Aug. 29 and are available at:

  • Albert Lea Police Department, 411 Broadway Ave. S. (enter through the law enforcement lobby on College Street)
  • Albert Lea City Hall, 221 Clark E. St. (Finance Department window on the top floor)

For more information, please contact Steinberg at ksteinberg@ci.albertlea.mn.us or 507-473-3463, or Lt. Jeff Strom at 507-377-5254.
