END USE FOR CONTAMINATED SITE? The City of Albert Lea is applying for a federal grant to clean up the site of the former Merrick’s of Minnesota facility at 620 Adams Ave. The city ended up with the site after the company went bankrupt and abandoned the site. Now the buildings need to have asbestos, bird feces and other materials removed, along with any contaminated soil underneath. Some of the buildings are hazardous and need to be removed. The city is seeking public input on 3 options for the site, which is located along the planned Songbird Trail: 1) Mini park with greenspace and parking; 2) Mixed Use Area with salvaging some buildings for sale to a private business for reuse; 3) Full Trailhead with removing buildings and adding greenspace, a shelter, restrooms and parking. For more information and to submit comments, attend an open house on Tuesday, Oct. 21, from 4- 6 p.m. at City Hall, 221 E. Clark St. or visit www.cityofalbertlea.org/public-notices/. ... You say ‘ you want public input’ what’s the point, y’all do want you feel like doing, our opinions don’t matter to you!

2 to recoup some money and bring in another business.
Option 4: Full trailhead on the north end, sell the building to recoup some money and create a pollinator habitat on the south end where the other parking lot is labeled. Increase the amount of natural space, provide amenities to the trail and recover some of the cost from the buildings.
Option 2, reach out to the business across the street and see if they could utilize the building that could be sold.
The one time I say don’t do anything.. wildlife lives there. I know it sounds weird but hear me out…. From the swampy areas by bomgaars, the cornfields and open area by 9th and the lake. The amount of wildlife in that triangle… please don’t!
How about a hospital, bowling alley we have tons of outdoors trails! Also if it does happen to be a park at least put a ferris wheel in there!! 💯
What is this? What is this thing with the parks? A fetish? Everything ok at home champ? Blink twice if you need help.
The control freak clowns that run this town are going to take our money and do whatever TF they want with it anyway. Why even ask? Oh! I know why! So residents of this town will think the administration cares so much. Yeah right.

CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY: Fire Prevention Week, October 5-11, uses the theme “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home” to educate the public on the safe use of these common batteries found in everything from smartphones to power tools. Because improperly used or damaged lithium-ion batteries can overheat, cause fires, or even explode, the campaign stresses the importance of following a buy, charge, and recycle safely approach. This includes only buying certified products, using the correct charging cords and manufacturer instructions, and responsibly recycling batteries at approved locations rather than throwing them in the trash. As part of the week, the City of Albert Lea will participate in Operation E.D.I.T.H. on Wednesday, October 8, at 7 p.m. When the sirens sound, everyone is encouraged to practice their home fire exit drill. Additionally, Albert Lea Fire Rescue will hold an open house on Saturday, October 11, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the fire station. ... See MoreSee Less

MORE TO DOCK PROJECT COMING IN 2026! The Albert Lea Public Works Department recently completed plans with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to finish the community dock on Fountain Lake along Bridge Avenue. The landing, funded by the Shell Rock River Watershed District with a state grant, has been in place since fall of 2024. Next year the Public Works Department will install the dock portions that will include a kayak launch for easy access on and off the lake, including for people with mobility issues. The DNR is funding $65,000 with the city providing the remaining cost of $30,500. Keep following us for updates. ... See MoreSee Less

Maybe you can fix the road by there to
You mean the people are paying for it! Just tell it like it is! I mean cities are good for trying to slip through cracks and ignoring that the taxpayers pay for it!
100k??? Does that come with a gold toilet?
Will the city make a crosswalk on Bridge there? And speaking of crosswalks--the one between Eat'n Ice Cream and New Denmark Park didn't get repainted all summer.
So glad more is coming! Tried to pull a boat up there and bottomed out. Will be a nice addition to the lake and be great to be able to access the businesses across the street while spending the day on the water or pick up passengers.
Heather Gwilt
Nice addition to fountain lake! It’ll get plenty of use.
A kayak launch? Where are people going to park and unload kayaks to access this launch? It’s nice to have a dock there to run to grab lunch or drinks from the gas station while on the lake but I don’t get the “easy access on and off the lake” for kayaks haha
I always thought that would be the perfect location
I think It's one of many dumb ideas this City has come up with. That Street is way too busy and that will be putting people in danger. Where do they get their hair brained ideas from. Stupid Ideas for Dummies. Sorry but you all no they make some really crazy decisions for our town and we rarely get a voice in it.
We have a Beautiful city and this will add to it
Nice, keep providing for all of Albrt Lea. Appreciate, no degrading needed. This is what brings the community together. At this point and time, much needed.
Based on the amount of time that I see paddle boarders and kayakers spending in the beach parking lot to unload/load/ and prep to paddle, it would seem far more practical to put that launch over on the dock at the beach. Many people have inflatables or collapsible boats, not to mention sometimes changing gear and securing belongings in waterproof bags.
Fix the roads.
Why not put the Kayak launching down by the Brookside Boat Landing. That is where they rent kayaks. I also wondered where people would park while launching kayaks. That's a very busy traffic area.
Such a great idea to take advantage of access to businesses in area. $30K cost for Albert Lea is a bargain. Great improvement for the city!
I don't boat there, but I used to when we lived in A.L. That spot seems kind of hectic for for that docking. Lots of car traffic and pedestrians trying to cross Bridge street without lights or traffic control doesn't seem too safe????
I agree. The roads in this town are horrific but this city council doesn't give a shit about the roads. They would rather do all the woke crap that 4 people want instead of the 13k people who have to drive in this damn city

Cody Schaefer WOW!!! I can tell you are on the wrong side of the law! You must be a very stupid law breaker that always gets caught... Are you one of those Butt Hurt Democrats that think they are getting picked on??? Wake up moran... If police werent here your phone or computer would be stolen so you couldn't see this post!!!! Just another good law abiding citizen right???
Fraud is what police do everyday. Policing for profit under the guise of safety. They commit more traffic violations than the public, but when we do it, we are subjected to fines, searches, beatings, and incarnation.
*UPDATE: the wheelchair has been located and returned to the owner. The investigation into the circumstances of the theft will continue. Thank you to an attentive citizen for providing valuable information that led to the recovery of this very expensive item!
A local resident with muscular dystrophy had his electric wheelchair stolen out of his garage. Without his chair, he cannot independently get around. Attached is a stock photo of a similar chair. It is a power chair with the ability to assist in standing. Colors are similar, but the chair is 3 years old so the red is a bit faded. We are asking for help from the public with this one. If you see something, please say something. The theft occurred sometime between 7pm last night and 7am this morning at a residence near the intersection of Edgewood Ave and Ramsey St. If anyone knows of or sees an electric wheelchair (similar to this one) where it does not belong, or is suspiciously at, please contact Sgt. Vanthavong @ 507-377-5129 or via email at svanthavong@ci.albertlea.mn.us.

Glad it was found!
Glad it was located.👍👍
God is good! 🙌
so glad that it has been found but what kind of sick person steals somebody’s wheelchair?? As a disabled citizen myself, this just makes me sick to my stomach to hear this. I’m so glad that we do have some decent citizens in this town and people who are willing to help those who need it. I am so sorry that this happened and I’m sending good thoughts and prayers thank you for those who have helped and continue to help.
You guys located it!? That is incredible. Nice work!!!
That's terrible, I have muscular dystrophy
A chair like this was stolen from my garage in the night. 503 Edgewood ave
Very sad, glad it was found. No one should think it’s remotely okay to steal something like this from someone 😢
Thank you ALPD. 💓
How sad for someone to do this
Definitely an awful thing to do to someone.
We just donated one to the American legion. Maybe they can help.
Good to hear it was found. Hopefully the punishment fits the crime. At least a few days in the county pokey to think about it.
Thanks for posting! I'm happy it was found and I hope the thief does some clink time.
I hope the people that were involved in stealing it get jail time!
Some people are totally disgusting!
Pretty low😑
Really? What is wrong with people?
Why?? Why do people have to be like this
People are sick this whole world is sick these days everyone is sick
Takes a sick Individual to do that
Takes a real scumbag to steal a wheelchair.

The Albert Lea Police Department and Minnesota law enforcement are cracking down on seat belt and car seat violations now through September. Buckling up is your best defense against injury or death in a crash. In 2024, 106 people who died in traffic crashes weren't wearing a seat belt. Population been 18,000 forever, no way we benefit from more cops and government workers. Cops don't prevent crime people, they show up after and often make it worse.
This is purely a money grab under the guise of safety. Punishment of the people who pay your salary. You should be ashamed. Even if it's "the law", there's this thing called right and wrong. Albert Lea needs taxpayer relief, we DO NOT need to pay for another officer $120,000. We don't need to keep extra money in the levy for OT. We need 1 less ALPD and 1 less deputy until the levy is $0 for at least 5 years. Policing for profit must end. You guys get amazing pay and benefits, you don't need OT.
REPORTED THREATS OF VIOLENCE
On Sept. 22, 2025, at approximately 7:30 a.m., the Albert Lea Police Department (ALPD) and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office received information from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) regarding a potential threat of violence intercepted through social media monitoring.
Upon receiving this information, ALPD school resource officers immediately notified, at approximately 7:45 a.m., District 241 school officials. Due to the timeframe of many students already at school, Albert Lea Area Schools had all students move into their buildings and some went into secure mode due to the nature of the threat.
Law enforcement from the police department and sheriff’s office were promptly deployed to local schools to ensure safety.
Working in collaboration with District 241 staff, officers identified and located a juvenile female who was considered a person of interest.
At this time, the investigation remains ongoing, and details are limited. However, law enforcement and school authorities have confirmed that there is no active or ongoing threat to students or staff.
The ALPD, Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI continue to work together to ensure the safety and security of Albert Lea schools and community.

Would be nice to be given more information regarding this threat. Very little details were given in the pre recording and it is terrifying. What type of threat could a child pose that the fbi would be involved in.
Can we get a name of the person in question? I am aware she is a minor but I feel like once a threat is made she forfeited her rights to keep her name private. Then the public can also know how she is punished. So this doesn't turn into a catch and release.
Thank you for acting right away. I am saddened, angry and frustrated that this is happening in my hometown. The town that watched me grow up and gives me joy.
Just picked my daughter up, scary. Hope this child gets the help she needs and big ty to law enforcement/school for handling the best they can 😔

I'm glad there were no lives lost. However, this is still a traumatic event for many - students, staff, parents and authorities alike. It's so sad to see this happening so frequently in our state and country.
Well done 👏🏻way to monitor SM & take appropriate action!
GREAT job ALPD AND ALBERT LEA SCHOOL DISTRICT !!!!!
Thank you, Albert Lea Police Department, for your exemplary service!
Thank you for the update and keeping our children safe!
Now we have to wait and see if the punishment will be on the same level as the threat.

Thank you so much for keeping our kiddos and staff safe! 💕
I know my heart sunk we just dropped our 5 yr old off and were concerned seeing the police and principal on playground , everyone heading in early then minutes later receiving the automated call from the school describing what was happening vaguely, my heart was in my stomach. As an employee and most importantly, a mom, it was definitely unsettling. Thank you so much for your quick response! 🙏❤️
I’m just glad that we got a call this time so we can make our own choices for our kids to be picked up from school!
Thank you to everyone involved for their protection of our most precious resource.
I love how the FBI was monitoring social media and alerted ALPD immediately! Great job!
Thanks for keeping our children safe .. although I do believe we should have been notified right away for the children that weren’t at school yet so us as parents could have made the decision to send our children or not
Thank you FBI for taking these threats seriously and contacting local authorities.

School buses are back on the road, which means it's time for a refresher on bus stop safety! Remember, on undivided roads, all vehicles traveling in both directions must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus with its stop arm extended and red lights flashing. Passing a school bus is not only dangerous, but it can also lead to a $700 fine and even criminal charges. Let's all do our part to keep students safe. Slow down, pay attention, and look out for buses and children, especially in neighborhoods and school zones. ... See MoreSee Less

Drivers are using the yellow lights as if Red. Consistent proper use of the lights needs to be trained.
They should mandate buses have dash cams so these bus drivers are not able to blow through stop signs . I see alot of this in town .
That fine of $700 goes to school or city hall???
The newspaper needs to publish every violators name not just some.
Pretty sad people need reminders on children's safety..
There are states implementing new technology on school buses where they have cameras. They have issued thousands of citations since introducing the new tech, I think everywhere needs to follow suit. People are too willing to throw lives away.

Clothes dryer vents - have you looked at yours recently?
The aluminum foil ones (in the first photo) can pose a significant fire hazard because they can collect lint and catch fire. If in use, they are intended to be installed fully extended, with no bends, and should not exceed 8 feet in length.
Dryer vents are relatively easy to switch out. A better choice would be a semi-rigid (like the second photo) as it can make bends, but doesn't trap lint as easily, and the best choice would be a completely rigid duct like in the third photo.

Careless smoking and improperly discarded cigarettes are leading causes of fatal fires in Minnesota year after year.
• Use a deep, sturdy ashtray. Place it away from anything that can burn.
• Do not discard cigarettes in vegetation such as mulch, potted plants or landscaping, peat moss, dry grasses, leaves, or other things that could ignite easily.
• Before you throw away butts and ashes, douse them with water or bury them in sand.
