NEWS RELEASE: ASSAULT ARREST
On March 21, 2026, at approximately 5:08 p.m., Albert Lea Police Department (ALPD) officers were dispatched to a residence on Broadway Avenue South for a reported assault. Initial reports indicated that a 77-year-old resident was bleeding from the head after being attacked. Upon arrival, officers confirmed the victim was suffering from a head wound. Witnesses stated the suspect had fled into a nearby wooded area wearing all black, had bloody hands, and was carrying a metal object.
Officers located a male matching the description near Broadway Avenue South and Railroad Avenue. The subject, who had blood on his hands, was non-compliant and began walking away from officers, discarding items including a large metal object. Officers deployed less-lethal devices and successfully took the subject into custody without further incident.
Both the victim and the suspect were transported to the emergency room at Mayo Clinic Health System-Albert Lea for medical treatment.
The suspect has been identified as 44-year-old Paul Everett David who is in police custody. Preliminary investigation suggests the incident appeared to be a random encounter. The investigation remains ongoing; however, there is currently no threat to public safety.
The Albert Lea Police Department was assisted by Albert Lea Fire Rescue, Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office and Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service.

My heart absolutely breaks & goes out to the poor victims family, Paul is my uncle who suffers SEVERELY with mental health issues. Hopefully we can try to get him some help this time..I’m SO SO sorry to everybody for my uncles actions. 😭😭 Please know he’s NOT a level headed person who just randomly decided to snap one day, he lives in the woods by choice to escape the voices in his head and doesn’t believe he needs professional help or has any issues..
I hope the elderly man is recovering okay.
I hope Paul can get the mental health care he needs now. I know he's had a long struggle with drugs homelessness and mental health... Praying for you Paul And for the elderly man I pray as well
Our Police Department is second to none, and we're lucky to have them.
I have to update my post about david. They can send him to St Peter state hospital for the mentally ill who are dangerous to the public. I'm sorry about what happened but there are consequences for his actions. Mentally ill people are court ordered there and have to abide by their rules. The crime involved a weapon as I read and was violent in nature. He will be better off there.
Excellent JOB Officers💯💯💯💯💯💯👍👍🙂🙂🙂🙂
Great job!!!

What bothers me so very much is the closing of Mental Health Hospitals. The 1970' 1980's brought a mentation to take mentally unhealthy individuals out of these hospitals, close the hospitals and utilize Community Integration. This has had a negative effect on many of these people. Very sad
Random encounter??? Seriously??? Just a random encounter?!!! holy crap! Stay safe out there, Everyone!

SEE AND BE SEEN: Minnesota law mandates headlight use during rain, snow, sleet, or hail, and whenever visibility is reduced by fog or smoke. Don’t trust your "Auto" setting to do the work. By manually clicking your lights to the "On" position, you ensure your taillights activate, making your vehicle visible to those following behind you. ... See MoreSee Less

33 CommentsComment on Facebook
Automobile headlights should work just like a Motorcycle. If the key is on and the engine running then all the lights are on.
And just because your automatic headlights are on doesn't mean your taillights are. Turn then on in fog and other conditions so people candle see you.
Perhaps the ALPD could do a traffic/driving/ parking tips/ laws once a week. Like make sure your headlights are actually functional or don’t park in the yellowed painted area etc.
Also worth mentioning is it’s illegal to drive around with a foot of snow on top of your car.
By manually clicking on I ensure a dead battery 🤣
What lights that are bad to have but helps you see better
There was one morning when I was driving into work (when it was still dark) and came up on a car that didn’t have their headlights on. My initial thought was to flash my lights at them, but I didn’t. As I approached them- I realized it was a police officer. So, would I have been in the wrong for doing so? I did mention this to an officer that I know. Sadly, I wasn’t able to make out who was driving- so we couldn’t give him/her some grief.
I personally use my full lights when driving in fog, snow. Etc. and really appreciate others do the same thing. Auto lights only turn on your front lights the cars coming up behind you need to see your lights too!
Need to start ticketing people again! Not just posting this! Teach people how to yield too!!!
Hope that people read this. I’m so tired of people with no lights on when they should be. I always turn mine on. My life is worth having headlight & taillights on all the time.
Can you mandate people actually doing the speed limit through residential areas instead of turning them into race tracks. Since the police are apparently too busy to patrol them??
Maybe if you’d start pulling those people over the rest of them would start listening. You know how many people I’ve watched police drive by without lights on in heavy rain and fog?
Can you please remind ALL members of law enforcement of this as well
Can we mandate cleaning all snow off a vehicle
Tell your own officers that. I have driven by so many officers when it is raining out, or sleeting or foggy and they don’t have any lights on. Yall love to enforce the law on civilians but hate doing it to your officers. 🤷♀️
Why not enforce it?
Hell I've seen cops with no headlights on
Thank you, could you post something about using your turn indicators. Putting them on in the turn lane is not helpful. We have already guessed what you are doing. They are indicators not confirmatorys.
It's a law in NY... but there are those that don't adhere to rules of the road.. Almost like daring the law enforcement to ticket them! (Good people always pay the price for the rule breakers!)
Dont talk about it, BE about it. I have YET to see anyone get pulled over for headlights other than 1 being burnt out in hopes to find a dui! Actually protect and pull the dumb people over that drive in snow storms and fog with no headlights!
Always usually a Ford product with no lights on.
Should be a fine when this is not done. Dangerous

🚨 SCAM ALERT: FAKE "NOTICE OF HEARING" 🚨
Our department has been made aware of a sophisticated scam circulating in the area. Residents are receiving official-looking "Notice of Hearing" documents for traffic or toll violations. These are fraudulent.
The scammers are using high-pressure tactics and realistic legal language to trick you into paying "fines" through a QR code.
🚩 How to Spot the Fake:
• The "Judge" and "Clerk": The document lists "John Smith" as both the Judge and the Clerk of the Court. In a real court system, these roles are held by different individuals.
• Generic Violations: It vaguely lists "Parking Violation / Toll Violation" without a specific location, vehicle plate number, or date of the alleged offense.
• QR Code Payments: Government agencies and courts will not ask you to settle a legal matter or pay a fine exclusively via a QR code or third-party payment link.
• Inconsistent Dates: Note the "Issued" date versus the "Hearing" date—scammers often create a short window to rush you into acting without thinking.
🛡️ Protect Yourself:
1. Do NOT scan the QR code. This can lead to phishing sites designed to steal your credit card or personal information.
2. Verify directly. If you are concerned about an actual citation, contact the Hennepin County District Court directly using a verified phone number from their official website (mncourts.gov).
3. Spread the word. Share this post with friends and family, especially those who may be more vulnerable to official-looking mail.

Here’s a feel good story for your Saturday enjoyment.
This portrait in this photo is of the Albert Lea Fire Department around 1900. The family of firefighter Joseph Brakken has been passing it on in their family, even emigrating to Canada with it over all these years. Brakken’s family recently reached out to us and asked us if we would like it.
Thanks to firefighter Brakken’s great-great-granddaughter, Darian, and her co-worker, Keith, it is currently making a journey from Moose Jaw, Canada, to Aberdeen, South Dakota. It will be received by the family of current captain, Kurt Wallace, who live in Aberdeen, and then it will make its final leg of the journey back to Albert Lea. 🥳

Your clocks probably changed themselves, but your CO alarm and your smoke alarms won't. Be sure to swap out your batteries today for new and check the date of manufacture to make sure the alarms are still valid.
A lot of calls we get are for expired batteries or expired detectors. Check the manufacture's recommendations, but in general, a carbon monoxide detector is good for seven years and a smoke detector is good for 10.

NEWS RELEASE: SHED FIRE
Albert Lea Fire Rescue (ALFR) responded to 17617 760th Ave. on Monday, Feb. 23, at 10:42 p.m. for the report of a shed on fire.
Fire crews arrived on scene and found an equipment and hay shed fully involved in fire. Crews worked to make a fire attack, but were forced out of the building when the roof began to collapse. Heavy equipment was brought in to remove the burning equipment and hay. The items were extinguished when removed from the shed, and crews were able to extinguish the rest of the fire in the building from exterior doorways. Work continued through the early morning hours and the hay was left to burn due to the deep-seated fires within.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but appears to be accidental in nature.
ALFR was assisted on the scene by the Glenville Fire Department, Hayward Fire Department, Clarks Grove Fire Department and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office.
Damage estimates are unknown at this time, but the equipment and shed were total losses.

BEAT THE BIN: Last year, Freeborn County diverted 22,280 tons of waste from landfills, outperforming its garbage output. To keep this momentum going and further reduce the 18,693 tons still being trashed, residents can use these local resources:
Single-stream recycling: Use Waste Management carts for paper, plastic, glass, and metal. Keep items loose—no plastic bags.
Specialty disposal: Drop off electronics and hazardous waste (paint, cleaners) at Freeborn County Environmental Services to protect groundwater.
Spring Cleanup: Visit Albert Lea’s annual event on Saturday, April 25 (9 a.m.–noon) for discounted disposal of furniture, appliances, and tires.

The sad part is you see plenty of recycling cans with a yellow lids that people have stuffed full of plastic bags which it says do not have plastic bags there’s a house on in the corner of Newton and front Street that has only four recycling cans they threw all their garbage in the recycling cans. They do not pay to have garbage picked up and I think that’s a crying shame.
Would be awesome to open the free/reduced pricing for the county instead of just townsfolk.
That's awesome
How can we really be certain that WM is actually recycling these things and not just sending them to the landfill too? I love recycling but I hear things.

Nobody in Albert Lea is interested in this Blue Zones gaslighting project, so why do you keep it front and center of your efforts in Albert Lea? This is a really a sad statement about the leadership of this town which DOES NOT SUPPORT A BLUE ZONES HOODWINK THAT'S ABOUT FORCING YOU INTO A PLANT BASED DiET. That's the only reason Dan Buttner and the fake "Blue, Zones" exist. Stupid Albert Lea believes Blue Zones is the future when it's nothing more than a social engineering scheme to stop you from eating meat. They claim they reduced smoking by 35% in Albert Lea when those are their statistics and smoking cessated at the same rate all over the state during the same time period. The difference between Albert Lea and the rest of the state is that Albert Lea made laws to enforce the Blue Zones project without input from any constituent That any "Blue Zones" exist in this world where people all live to be a hundred is a flat out lie. Albert Lea is the first Blue Zones because it's made up. It's fake. It's embarrassing to think businesses would be attracted to a place that's interested in socially engineering their population.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED WITH LOW-TIME COMMITMENT: The Albert Lea Board of Appeals is seeking a volunteer to fill 1 open seat. This 7-member board plays a key role in reviewing requests for zoning variances, which are exceptions to the rules for conditions such as property setbacks and building heights. It meets only when needed, which is usually a few times a year. This a great way to get involved in community decisions without a big time commitment.

7 member board, 1 open seat, the picture must be missing people?
Is there a comprehensive list of all the members currently serving on the board?
