LEVY LOWERED: At its Dec. 8 meeting, the Albert Lea City Council trimmed its proposed 2026 property tax levy by nearly $200,000, lowering the levy increase from 8.0% to 5.3%. The change comes after updated insurance and workers comp costs dropped. The council also cut $53,000 toward paying for cleanup at the Blazing Star Landing because proceeds from selling land there should cover that cost.
What this means for homeowners:
• If your property value stayed the same, your city taxes may go down, thanks to a larger tax base.
• If your valuation went up, your city taxes will likely increase.
Many reported tax hikes are due to higher property valuations. Questions about your valuation? Contact the Freeborn County Assessor’s Office at 507-377-5176.

Thank you for considering your residents.

Where do all these fees go to?

More taxes!

I don't even drink but there is so much money that is already generated from liquor sales I really don't think you should do more that a $100 increase per year.

General fund !!

Cut expenses instead of raising everything

Maybe if the city wants to make money they should tow the cars parked on the streets during snowstorms!!!!!

We get higher taxes for general fund and these establishments in Albert Lea get a double whammy higher fees ! Must be because the pull tab and electronic games are making these businesses to much money and some others want their cut 👍

I dont remember buying a ticket to this show but the jokes suck. Ya fuckin clowns

When is enough enough? Never for the greedy.

This should be looked at again. My dad, a long time businessman in town wrote a letter I recently found that was written to a distant cousin in the mid-sixties. In it he noted we were a town growing with a population of 18,600 or so. We are now at 18,300 sixty years later. Let's really take a look at this. I don't drink so I'm not a player in the issue but I think we can find a way to keep this lower.

Parking ticket. Contact registered owner. Dialog. Then resolve the issue like adults. Perhaps the sitting car was sold, but the buyer never transferred title? Look into it before you just tow it. Most conflicts can be settled with calm, rational conversation.

Or show up for a ride a long since all these keyboard warriors seem to know how to do it better.

Lets play a game .........how many people will complain about this post?

This is the snow removal policy on the hyperlink. Make vehicle removal even/odd times mandatory or tow it. Every other city has that rule. Its laughable how many cars just get left, then leave and leave behind a giant snow drift. Let's make life easier for the city plows.

All I ask if they can please remove the snow on my side of the street they only did across the street and there were no cars on my side of the street

Would be nice if they went over the roads in town a few more times after a snowfall.

Start doing the side roads it's not easy to drive on and also cars almost slide into you on them

Thank you very much!

Please plow margaretha ave today no matter what . The north end

Is there prospective businesses looking at utilizing these two parcels?

Put commercial space in the middle of residential? Genius planning Albert Lea.

What's that going to cost us residents??

Whats wrong with that space between Home Depot and Syversons?

It doesn’t matter to them. I’m quite sure that the decision has already been made.

How healthy is this to residential area?

Red is residential. Blue is proposed commercial. Make. it. Make. Sense.

Decision is already made.... did it with 2 parcels on 775th ave back in October... was pointless going to the zoning meeting

Ya .great place to have semi truck traffic .this city counsel is as crooked as walz

I’m more interested who was originally there first? It seems as if they originally built the trailer parks to house the factory workers as they were building industrial plots. Which makes sense. The highlighted areas I attach here would be my suggestion. Fill in blue with more industrial and move all residential into the red. Seems more uniform that way. Rather than random plot of industrial in the middle of residential.

Not logical on their end but hopefully it pushes them to maintain 11th street better 😅

Aren’t there plenty of open space already. Fill them first. That’s called fiscally responsible. I’m all for expansion but there’s a right way to do it.

Those poor people in the trailer court. They’re gonna be boxed in around industrial so probably in the future imminent (I think I spelt that right) domain will kick in.

I made this for you!

It's a joke for people that live in that area more people will move if that happens

People could have built houses here. Yet no one did. So what’s the problem?

Didn't the city years ago pay to prep all the land next to severson's that still sits empty??? Why not use this resource all us tax payers already paid for?

Of course, residential property value does not mean crap unless the city wants to create additional taxes by raising residential property Values so they can collect more taxes!

I'm sure the kids in the trailer park can't wait to have more semis and buildings to look at.

No kidding. There are alot of deer in that area too.

Do it. More business means more jobs. More jobs means more families. More families supports better services, healthcare and commercial businesses. Etc

I've lived here for a year now I like it but with 2 major freeways running through it this town should have more job opportunities and more business need more family restaurants instead of fast food especially by the interstate that will bring more money to the town just saying

Why wouldn’t you do this out by the interstates.more semis going through residential areas. Make it easy on the drivers. Faribault is developing along 35 not through residential. And what incentives is the city willing to offer to get businesses wanting to build here? Tax free of the home owners? 10-15 employees does not a big business make. 50-100 employees or more is what we need. Why can’t we get a grocery store on west side of town? Off subject but could the city have made some mistakes on our proposed taxes? My taxes are going up $1222. They will be over $3000. Well over what they valued my property.? Over 50%. Why are some way less? Is it coincidence with all the things going on in this state right now? When is the next meeting? I’ve heard there are 3.

If we dont have land for companies to look at we have lost THAT POTENTIONAL New business. We need to be ready to receive a company instead of wait and see. GOOD PLANNING BY THE CITY TO BE READY

awh this is so sweet

Great Job ALPD Chief Darren Hanson!

I'm sorry but most cops just want to pull people over and not have proof of the Speed if you clock me over the limit it should show my plates and speed not say that is not we ALPD monitor. Is BS is our right. People need to fight their tickets and have the the cops go and stop crime from happening instead of them going to Aragon to get free glance. I just want our town to go back to be safe, we can't even leave our vehicle unlocked anymore.

Thanks for taking good care of us

Way to go Sir.

Yes they are getting a little bit better. They Still need a lot of work they should learn from the sheriff depart.

I would love to help but I am 75 Vietnam veteran 100% disabled with advanced stage 4 prostate cancer from agent orange. I live on the end of a city street and the snow plows cover the fire hydrant and my driveway there is no way I can clear it.

Our next engine, E917, is in production! We are anticipating it being finished early in the new year.

Behind every new fire engine is months of preparation and planning. Our team has been hard at work reviewing designs, equipment layouts, and safety features to ensure the next fire apparatus we add to our fleet meets the needs of both our firefighters and the community we serve.

From countless hours of discussion, research, and collaboration, every detail matters — because when the call comes, we need the right tools in the right place to respond quickly and effectively.

What’s causing these fires??

The stock photo used does NOT match the description, is very misleading, and unnecessarily over-dramatizes the event. Why use it?
