SUMMER ALERT: MOTORCYCLE FATALITIES HIT RECORD HIGHS IN MINNESOTA.
The numbers are a stark reminder: motorcycle fatalities on Minnesota roads have hit a 7-year high, surpassing previous peaks. As summer heat rises, so does the traffic risk. This isn't just a statistic; it's our community members.
It’s up to everyone—drivers and riders alike—to reverse this trend. The Minnesota Safety Council and NETS remind all road users to:
• WATCH for motorcycles at all times.
• AVOID distractions.
• LOOK TWICE at intersections and before changing lanes.
Let’s work together to drive Minnesota toward zero deaths. A message from the Albert Lea Police Department. cityofalbertlea.org/departments/police

Stay off you phones while driving. I can’t count the number of times I’ve almost been hit by a person looking at their phone.
Wear your helmet, & pay attention to driving, nothing else. Drive like that's your job.
An experienced motorcyclist knows he/she has zero time for error. Head up and on a swivel. Road surface, animals, children, and dummies driving on 4 wheels. Ride safe my friends. The most dangerous thing on the road for you is the mamaluke on a cellphone.
DRIVE SAFE THIS SUMMER! The Southeast Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths initiative recently brought regional emergency responders—including the Albert Lea Police Department and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office—together in Albert Lea to advocate for safer roads.
We are currently in the "100 Deadliest Days" on Minnesota roads (Memorial Day through Labor Day). Local law enforcement is stepping up targeted speed and impaired-driving enforcement to keep everyone safe.
Traffic safety relies on the "Five Es":
• Engineering
• Education
• Enforcement
• Emergency Medical Services
• Everyone else (that's you!)
Let’s look out for one another and make sure everyone reaches their destination safely this summer

My request is for people to use their turn signals and not as your turning. That dose not help others on the road soon enough.
Put the phone down and pay attention to the road. I can't drive across town and not see someone driving while scrolling on the phone. Its getting dangerous. Be safe
Thank you everyone! You do such an amazing job!
Thank You everyone!

ALBERT LEA POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE: INJURY CRASH
On June 23, 2026, at approximately 9:18 p.m., officers from the Albert Lea Police Department (ALPD) responded to the intersection of Broadway Avenue South and William Street for a reported vehicle-versus-bicycle crash.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a pickup truck driven by a 17-year-old Albert Lea male was traveling northbound in the 200 block of Broadway Avenue South and came to a complete stop at the intersection of William Street. A 14-year-old Albert Lea male riding a bicycle was traveling northbound alongside the pickup truck. As the pickup truck began to pull away from the stop sign and proceed through the intersection, the bicyclist turned westbound directly in front of the vehicle without yielding the right-of-way.
The pickup truck struck the bicyclist, who sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The bicyclist was transported by ambulance for treatment.
The Albert Lea Police Department was assisted at the scene by Albert Lea Fire Rescue and Mayo Ambulance Service.
The crash remains under investigation.

Prayers for Xavier, he's always been such a trooper. God bless him. Also, prayers for the driver. Remembering that it was an accident. The 😧 anguish that I can imagine that goes along with that. 🙏🙏.
I am jus so happy to hear he will b ok that’s what matters
SORRY TO HEAR!🤔🙏MARK/SHARON 😞
Big truck , big tires ! Bigger problem! Lol…
Seth Tovar Tanelle Jessica
My son was with and I got the call of him balling . Got up there asap . The 17 year old was in a lift truck with white led lights all around and tinted windows. . Why does a 17 year old who has barely been driving allowed to have all those mods . My kids screamed your on top of him . I think before anyone starts speaking they should wait to comment . I had to walk over and tell the teenager to spit the gum out while talking to the police . No remorse from what I saw. He will never forget what happened but neither will my child or his friends seeing him get ran over Kids have always been kids since forever . But what I saw was a 17 year old show boating with a vehicle putting others at risk.
we are in a generation of E bikes, bicycles, electric, scooters, skateboarders, and not any training for most of them. Sooo dangerous, many of them are young kids that have no clue how to obey the laws. Stop signs , stoplights nothing Parents need to step up also! We have a bike lane and I was going down Broadway Hill and I had a kid on a bicycle in the center of the road. He was going faster than I was, and then cut across all the lanes on the left and went into the gas station🙄 I really really feel sorry for the 17 year-old that is going through this fear, also I am very happy that the boy on the bike is doing well.
I’m also a ebike rider, I’m so cautious of other people driving their vehicles! They don’t care 🤷♀️, oh let’s just pull out without looking at both sides! There will be more accidents occurring, the new Philips 66 out by comfort inn, people will pull out right in front of you and NOT look for other vehicles!
This could have been avoided if the person on the bike ‘ YIELDED ‘ !
Its always the drivers fault!!!
17 year olds sure are having difficulties in the area lately.
Yesterday 2 teens on bikes just cut right in front of me on main down by the old godfather location. Neither one of them even turned their heads to look. Noticing more and more of this these days. As well as more kids being hit. Parents are not doing their jobs....
Maybe there needs to be a refresher course for bicylists (and some pedestrians) I see so many that are on wrong sides of the road, in middle of driving lanes and not obeying traffic laws. I remeber learning that in elementary...did we stop teaching that stuff?
Pray for my nephew! He’s seriously injured!

NEWS RELEASE: VEHICLE PURSUIT
On June 21, 2026, at approximately 7:39 a.m., an Albert Lea Police Department (ALPD) officer took a stolen vehicle report of a 2013 Toyota Tacoma that had been taken some time over the previous evening.
On June 22, 2026, at approximately 7:33 p.m., ALPD officers were dispatched to the area of Front Street West and First Avenue South for a report of the stolen Toyota Tacoma being driven in the area. Officers arrived in the area and confirmed this was the reported stolen vehicle.
ALPD officers attempted to stop the stolen vehicle near First Avenue North and Fountain Street, but the driver fled. The vehicle was pursued for approximately 1.2 miles before the driver drove off the road near the intersection of Abbott Street and Winter Avenue. The driver then fled from the disabled vehicle on foot for approximately 500 feet, followed by officers. The driver was ultimately taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.
The driver was identified as Eh Wah Htoo, age 21, of Albert Lea. Htoo was charged with possession of stolen property, fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, and fleeing a peace officer on foot. Htoo also had an outstanding parole warrant from the Minnesota Department of Corrections. Htoo was taken to the Freeborn County Adult Detention Center where he was held on felony charges.

There should be an e-bike / scooter helmet law in every state.
We're kind of like the mailman - even when the weather isn't ideal, we're still out training. This week's paid-on-call training was reviewing different types of fire extinguishers that we could encounter, attacking a basement fire, and moving a charged hoseline through a simulated structure with corners.
Did you know there are different kinds of portable fire extinguishers for different situations? For example, there are: water-type, dry-chemical, CO2, Class B foam, halogenated-agent, dry-powder and wet-chemical.

Kwik Trip parking lots have given me great defensive driving skills 😂
Wait...why are they expanding? I thought they were building a new one right across the street on the Blazing Star Landing??
I don't think this town. Knows what it. Wants. It needs more. Industrial. Jobs .....I think
I'm guessing one of the apartment buildings there will be demolished to make room.
We'll see what happens
Just what we need another Kwik trip
can we focus on the bigger things, mr lea
Whatever happened to the one they were going to build on east main?
Are they expanding up? Double decker Kwik Trip? I’m not sure which direction they could go other than that.

WEEKLY MOSQUITO CONTROL BEGINS: Starting at dusk on Wednesday, July 15, the City of Albert Lea will begin its weekly mosquito control spraying, weather permitting. The city has contracted Mosquito Control of Iowa to provide the service. In case of inclement weather or high winds, spraying will take place on Thursdays through the remainder of summer. The crews will use Evoluer 4-4, an EPA- and Minnesota Department of Agriculture-registered product. Containing permethrin, this low-odor, non-corrosive pesticide offers a quick knockdown of mosquitoes and gnats while not harming bees. For details, visit mosquitocontrolofiowa.net or call Mosquito Control of Iowa at 712-848-3295. Thank you for thinking of the bees
Are they spraying everything or just same places have the time they never spray st Thomas Ave and they should be told to slow down so the spray will work I be watching
It's about time
Was wondering were the truck was
Better late than never!
Just curious if it’s poisonous to butterflies and dragonflies?
Are they not spraying on streets around the construction of Marshall?
I am glad this is finally happening but yes, slow down, they don't have to do 30 miles an hour down the streets.
