Albert Lea Police Department opens applications for 2026 Citizens Academy

City News January 23, 2026

The Albert Lea Police Department (ALPD) invites community members to go behind the badge during its upcoming 8-week Citizens Academy.

The program, which began in 2001, is designed to provide residents with a transparent, hands-on look at the policies, challenges and daily operations of local law enforcement.

Classes will meet Monday evenings March 16 through May 18 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Participants will engage in both lectures and practical exercises covering the following.

  • Criminal investigations: Narcotics, DUI enforcement and crime scene processing.
  • Operational tactics: Use of force, police equipment and field training.
  • Administration: Hiring procedures and the Community Service Officer program.
  • Field experience: An optional 4-hour ride-along with an Albert Lea officer.

Due to the interactive nature of the course, the academy is limited to 16 participants. Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Live or work within the City of Albert Lea.
  • Consent to and pass a limited background investigation.

“The Citizens Academy allows us to build stronger relationships with the community we serve,” said Detective Luke Tuzinski who coordinates the program. “It’s a chance for residents to see the work of our officers and gain insight into their daily duties.”

Applications must be submitted by Friday, March 6. Forms are available at:

  • Albert Lea Police Department: 411 Broadway Ave. S. in the law enforcement lobby on
    College Street.
  • Albert Lea City Hall: 221 Clark E. St. at the Finance Department window, top floor.
