Bike riders to Rock-n-Roll the Lakes in Albert Lea
The Albert Lea Area Cyclists and Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota are gearing up for the Rock-n-Roll the Lakes bike ride on Saturday, Aug. 16. This is a family-friendly event open to all ages.
Riders will pass by the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, named for the actress who played Mrs. C in the hit TV series “Happy Days” that focused on the fictional Cunningham family in the early days of rock music. Ross lived part of her childhood in Albert Lea.
The rock-n-roll theme also pays tribute to Eddie Cochran, a musician born in Albert Lea who gained fame in the mid-1950s with songs like “Summertime Blues.”
The bike ride, which started in 2018, raises money for bicycle safety and trail amenities, including a trailhead shelter planned for Frank Hall Park this year, near the street named for Eddie Cochran.
Check-in will be open from 8 – 10 a.m. on Aug. 16 with the ride starting and finishing at Central Park, 300 W. Clark St. Fees range from less than $12 to $42, depending on the rider’s age, with no fee for children age 5 and younger.
Riders may choose from 10-, 30- and 50-mile routes. If riding the 50 miles, participants should start by 9 a.m. Support services, including food stops, will be available through 1 p.m.
Pre-registration is open at www.bikemn.org/all-events/rock-n-roll-the-lakes-registration/. Participants may also register the day of the ride. Organizers are expecting about 200 participants this year.
Helmets are required, all fees are non-refundable, and the event is held rain or shine.
The night before the ride, bicyclists are welcome to a free glow ride around Fountain Lake, starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, in the north lot on Broadway Avenue. Helmets are required and participants should light their rides to be visible in the dark.
