What Does a Lifeguard Do?
Lifeguards with the Recreation Department ensure the safety of all aquatic facility guests through constant surveillance and professional emergency response. Their duties and skills include:
- Monitors pool zones and surrounding areas to recognize and respond immediately to emergency situations.
- Assists guests and participants by providing basic first aid and water rescue skills as outlined by the American Red Cross.
- Enforces facility policies to maintain a safe and orderly environment for all swimmers.
- Inspects facilities and equipment regularly to identify and report any unsafe conditions to supervisors.
- Performs light maintenance to keep the facility clean, including general cleaning and restocking supplies.
As the summer season approaches, lifeguards play a vital role in providing a safe recreational space for the Albert Lea community. By maintaining a high level of readiness and attending regular in-service trainings, these team members ensure that residents of all ages enjoy the water with confidence.
Lifeguards must be at least 15 years old and hold, or have the ability to obtain, a Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. This position offers a competitive pay range of $13.25 – $14.25 per hour and provides essential experience in public safety and community service.
