As the ice begins to melt on our lakes, we’ve noticed and have received complaints of kids throwing rocks into the water along the shoreline. We understand the curiosity that comes with the ice melting on the lake this time of year. While it may seem harmless, we want to share why this can actually cause problems.
Many lake shorelines are protected by rip rap—the layer of rocks placed along the edge of the water. These rocks are not just decorative. They play an important role in preventing shoreline erosion, protecting property, and keeping sediment out of the lake. When rocks are removed or thrown into the water, it can weaken that protection and lead to shoreline damage over time.
Please talk with your kids about leaving shoreline rocks where they are placed. Keeping the rip rap intact helps preserve the shoreline, protects the lake environment, and prevents costly repairs for the city, which extends to tax payers.
We appreciate everyone doing their part to help take care of our lakes and our community. 🌊🪨

Many of the comments on this post explain why society is in the place it is. People cant even take a polite educational post without finding a reason to be offended.
Thank you for saying it out loud. I’m so tired of kids or adults destroying the rip rap. It just shows the lack of education in some individuals and the ignorance in others.
Looking at some of these comments from people just goes to show why kids do what they do. It's really too bad the examples that these kids are shown.
Sorry, but this bothers me. Some of the comments are disturbing. It is a problem. It is harmful for a lot of reasons. Thanks for posting this. Talk to you kids.
Thank you for the education piece so people understand the “why”. 👍🏼😊
Thank you for your post LE. As a person who walks the lake there are a LOT of rocks that have been thrown out on it.
Very thoughtful post. Delivered in a thoughtful manner.
Lotta keyboard warriors out here today 😂 and whoever posted this did such a nice job too. This is why LE is a thankless job. Ya’ll rock over there in AL!
For those who think it's no big deal....you can pay for replacing those rocks (tax dollars and I am sure they aren't cheap) Skippin' stones isn't the same as using the rocks that protect the shore.
Adam Bangert It's when you throw a small smooth stone sideways into a lake or pond. If the water is still and and you throw it just below the surface, it "skips" across the water.
We all know the saying... "curiosity killed the rip rap" I would start to worry when the kids are throwing the 20lbs boulders!
Skipping stones?
Just tell em to use different rocks But dont actually like none of yall didn't throw rocks into the ice as kids either
Good god! Let them play!
Cry me a river..... Then come dredge Albert lea lake 🤣 Just be glad kids are playing outside and not on a damn phone or video game!
Rip Rap is not a natural landscape and ideally it should not be used. If it’s there already you could greatly improve it by covering with soil and planting appropriate native vegetation which will tightly hold everything together with the roots. Meanwhile, get a load of rocks dumped out nearby and let the kids have fun!
Those rocks had been washed up on the shore. These kids are placing them back for free
I feel some parents might fail to see the reason behind the rocks along the shoreline. Maybe they need the schools to add something more to their work load. No reason we can't educate our own children in why things are done to protect our waters and our natural resources. Great things to talk about at the diner table or when you have windshield time with family. Water is life but can also cause damage. 🌱
And don’t throw them at ICE agents either.
I agree, imagine being that rock and your just ripped out of your home and thrown into a a new place where you have to make new rock friends and start over with your life without your family or anything
Come on. Let the kids be kids. If they aren't throwing them at the lake, they might be throwing them at your car.
This is so stupid. I will be out there throwing rocks with kids. Enjoying life
Let the principals know at the schools please.
does somebody need some cheese with that wine ,,,,
What’s even more funny is, when I was a kid, I used to hit rocks with a baseball bat into a nearby farm field. Now that’s going to change majority of your opinions and come back to say it was wrong for me to do such, because those rocks could damage the farm equipment. Yes in fact I got in trouble, and spoke to from the farmer, came close to doing community service for him. Guess what? I was “just a kid”, also that “it was just a field”. Notice how I can say the same damn things? The comparison of Land erosion damage and Farm equipment damage all comes back to the person who throws the rocks, it’s wrong in every way and consequences are made.
COMMENDED: The Albert Lea City Council recognized the efforts of Police Officer Joshua Knudtson and Sgt. Alex Kunkel for their efforts in saving a child on Jan. 21, 2026, as part of an AMBER Alert. “On that day, these officers just didn’t come to work. Local McDonald's Restaurant in Albert lea Minnesota hit by Iranian Missle on Tuesday...🙀🍟🍔🚀🍔🍟🙀
Your clocks probably changed themselves, but your CO alarm and your smoke alarms won't. Be sure to swap out your batteries today for new and check the date of manufacture to make sure the alarms are still valid.
A lot of calls we get are for expired batteries or expired detectors. Check the manufacture's recommendations, but in general, a carbon monoxide detector is good for seven years and a smoke detector is good for 10.

NEWS RELEASE: SHED FIRE
Albert Lea Fire Rescue (ALFR) responded to 17617 760th Ave. on Monday, Feb. 23, at 10:42 p.m. for the report of a shed on fire.
Fire crews arrived on scene and found an equipment and hay shed fully involved in fire. Crews worked to make a fire attack, but were forced out of the building when the roof began to collapse. Heavy equipment was brought in to remove the burning equipment and hay. The items were extinguished when removed from the shed, and crews were able to extinguish the rest of the fire in the building from exterior doorways. Work continued through the early morning hours and the hay was left to burn due to the deep-seated fires within.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but appears to be accidental in nature.
ALFR was assisted on the scene by the Glenville Fire Department, Hayward Fire Department, Clarks Grove Fire Department and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office.
Damage estimates are unknown at this time, but the equipment and shed were total losses.

Have you seen this billboard east of Skyline Plaza on Main Street?
Minnesota Firefighter Initiative (MnFIRE) installed the billboard to remind firefighters that they have free access and private support during a crisis. The initiative asked our fire chief, Jeff Laskowske, along with other Minnesota fire chiefs, to participate in the campaign.
MnFIRE helps Minnesota’s firefighters protect their health by focusing on the three biggest risks in the service: heart disease, emotional trauma and cancer. Through the Hometown Heroes Assistance Program, the organization offers free health and wellness training to every fire department in the state.
Departments can sign up for two-hour classes covering topics like:
• MnFIRE Awareness: An overview of heart health, trauma, and cancer risks.
• Emotional Wellness
• Cancer Prevention
• Heart Health
• Sleep, Fitness and Nutrition
If needing help right away, firefighters should call the 24-hour hotline at 888-784-6634.

Impressive Jeff!
They should have had the words translated on the show as he was singing!!!!! Shell shock for everyone!!!!!
If it's for firefighters, why not just put up a poster at the fire station? It's not my money, nor is it a big deal, just seems weird to put up a billboard for what, maybe 20 firefighters in town? Don't get me wrong though, I love the message.
Love this! ♥️♥️♥️
public awareness, accurate information is vital. stand with our Albert Lea Fire Rescue & Law Enforcement. hold them as well as who they're accountable to, accountable.
Just because I carry it well, doesn't mean it's not heavy. Admitting you need help, is not a sign of weakness. It's the strongest thing you can do. Reach out to the DAV for copies of the books about PTSD and trauma. We have extra copies to borrow. 507-318-0199 DAV cell number, leave a message.
This is great!
A commentor asked "why a billboard and not just posters".....This billboard may target firefighters...but firefighting is a male‐dominated industry and men's mental health (and mental health in general) is sorely under addressed. Firefighters are highly respected and are an admired representation of strength and valor; to show that strong men sometimes need help and that it is okay to ask for help...this benefits everyone and helps remove the stigma.
I don’t see anything wrong with this! Albert Lea Fire Rescue thank you for sharing this information!
Hey Freeborn County fire departments, law enforcement and ambulance services - we are still looking for teams for our second annual bean bag tournament! Deadline to sign up is March 2.

Hopefully the same thing goes with the city workers who are working to plow this messy crap.
❄️ SNOW PLOWING UPDATE, SUNDAY, MARCH 15 ❄️
Crews have been out plowing since 4 a.m. This afternoon, a fresh team is hitting the roads to keep emergency routes clear.
Starting at 2 a.m. tomorrow, crews will begin plowing the entire city—including all residential neighborhoods. Please move vehicles off the streets if possible so plows can work quickly and safely.
The Street Department is deploying 10 plow trucks, 2 motor graders, 3 front-end loaders and other equipment to clear all 120 miles of city streets.

Weather forecast for Southern Minnesota 😎 ☀️
Not complaining but the mornings when there is a dusting or no snow at all the plow goes by my house 4-5 times. Sparks flying and all. Now not snowing anymore and they can’t go by til tomorrow morning. So it doesn’t matter if ambulance or fire trucks need to get down any residence streets with 7” of snow. Or people need to go to work no matter what their job is. Everyone’s taxes went way up but I guess this is not included. Thanks.
I love these kinds of updates!
Thank you!!
Thank you!🙏
Usually, we’re one of the first roads they come to because of ambulance and they haven’t been here yet today.
Any word on county plowing plans?
Thanks for all you do! That’s a lot of miles !
Thank you!

Your work is appreciated! It doesn't go unnoticed. Stay safe
Thanks for letting the public know. Drivers work long hours I'm sure.
Thanks I made it to work behind you guys
Do you happen to know if they are doing Minnesota avenue today or will it be one of the roads that gets done around 4:00 am? We don't have the ability to park our car off of the street and I would like to know so that way I can be out on time to move my vehicle.
Thanks for your work! And sharing this update!
Snow plows get a lot of grief on how they plow the streets. They never plow street good enough, they plow our streets when they don't need to, the always plow my street right after I get done shoveling or snow blowing driveway. They purposely turn the plow blades to put more snow in my driveway. And I've said some of these same things. But honestly I want to say THANK YOU Albert Lea for at least giving us good streets to drive down when so many people are against you.....
My son plows for the DOT..they take calls at very odd hours and over weekends. They don't decide when to go..its up to their higher ups.
Great update!
