Why Is My Water Bill So High?
Why is my water bill so high? Consider the usage, look for leaks
Some utility consumers notice an increase in their water bills during the summer. This increase often reflects using water to irrigate lawns and fill swimming pools.
Before 2013, the City of Albert Lea billed consumers for water usage based on how much wastewater went down their sewer line. This approach meant consumers paid only for water that they used or drinking, flushing toilets, bathing, washing clothes, doing dishes and similar activities. It also meant that consumers did not pay for water used for lawn sprinklers and swimming pools.
Since 2013, the City of Albert Lea has followed a conservation fee schedule to comply with State of Minnesota laws. The intent of the laws and fee schedule are to encourage residents to reduce their water usage as part of preserving water supplies for future generations.
If not wanting to pay a sewer fee for water used for irrigation and similar uses, consumers may install a separate water meter that will not be billed for sewer usage.
These consumers should consider the following when deciding on a separate meter:
- Cost to purchase a second meter (see fee schedule)
- Cost to hire a plumbing company to install the meter
- A base fee for a 5/8″ meter or a 3/4″ meter (see fee schedule) will be charged for the second meter in addition to the normal usage fees
- Meters will not be pulled at the end of the summer
Other reasons for higher-than-normal water bills include:
- Leaking faucets and toilets
- Running water to prevent pipes from freezing
- Broken pipes and water lines
- Long-term houseguests and college students returning home during breaks
- Large gatherings during holidays and other events
