Building and Inspection

Building and Inspection Department Detail.

Overview

The Building and Inspection Department administers and enforces the Minnesota State Building Code and the City of Albert Lea Zoning Ordinance.

Building codes provide minimum standards to safeguard life, health, property and public welfare by regulating and controlling design, construction, quality of materials, use and occupancy, location and maintenance of all buildings, structures and certain equipment within this jurisdiction.

City building inspectors check certain construction and equipment, along with issuing building permits, reviewing plans, answering questions, and assisting with public and contractor education.

In addition, inspectors investigate, inspect and enforce the City of Albert Lea minimum standards ordinance for dwelling structures. Dwelling structures include apartments, mobile homes, rooming houses and temporary shelters. Inspectors also recommend removal of structures considered unsafe and beyond repair.

Electrical permits are enforced through the State of Minnesota. Permitting information is available on their website.

For electrical inspections, contact the state electrical inspector Todd Drescher at 612-394-7194 or email todd.drescher@state.mn.us.
